Extend The Life of Your Favorite Writing Tool With a Pen Refill

You may have heard of the concept of “planned obsolescence.” While this has gone on steroids in recent years with the wholesale export of American industry to Red China, the fact is that the concept goes far back into the history of American manufacturing – and at one time, there was actually a logical reason for it (and has some bearing on the idea of the ink pen refill).

According to Kent Family Chronicles author John Jakes, the first serious American industry was shipbuilding, which got its start in the early 1700s. In those days however, there were two issues in play: first, the construction of a full-sized seagoing vessel from blueprint to launch could take between ten and twenty years. Secondly, maritime technology was advancing at a fast pace; faster, in fact than these ships could be built.

In essence, an 18th-Century sailing ship was obsolete as soon as it slid into the water. Therefore, it made little economic sense to construct them to be durable. Unfortunately, this became a habit that found its way into virtually all industries, leading to our wasteful “throwaway” culture.

A pen refill is an excellent way to reduce, reuse and recycle.

There is a pen refill available for a wide variety of writing instruments – in fact, you’ll find that there is a pen refill for all of your favorite types of pen.  A fountain pen refill is quite easy to find, and these have been around for decades. However, ballpoint pen refills and the ever-popular rollerball refills are also easy and economical ways to extend the useful life of your quality writing tools. It’s true that most people today use word processing equipment, such as computers, for their finished works. However, for jotting down ideas quickly at a spur of the moment, there is nothing better than a reliable pen and an old-fashioned pad of paper. This is a good reason to keep a fountain pen refill or two on hand – or an ink pen refill for whatever writing tool you prefer.

If you prefer the old standby ballpoint, you should be aware that ballpoint pen refills are available in both fine and medium as well as the full range of colors. Fortunately, the industry has a high degree of standardization, making it easier to select the right pen refill.
