7 Rules For Potty Training Your Dog

It’s inevitable that your dog has to pee or poop. It could get frustrating if you don’t know the keys to properly train your puppies.

Here I’ve provided seven key elements when it comes to potty training your dog.

Learn past behavior

Learning your dog’s past behavior could dramatically increase your chance of success with your potty training efforts. By doing so, you should know what to expect from your dog. Ask the previous owners or breeders about the dog’s background and behavior. The more you learn about your dog, the easier it is to train him.

Bring the dog outside

There are times that are better taking your dog outside to train – right after a meal, right after his naps, before bedtime, after playing for 10-15 minutes.

Use leash & words

Use slip-type leash as it is fast and easy to slip-on the puppy to take him outside. Make your dog get used to being on leash. If it is uncomfortable with it initially, then slip the leash on and carry him from his crate to outside. Always use words during the training, emphasizing a word or phrase in a sentence of action is important. For example, when your dog poops outside, say and repeat “GOOD potty! Yay, go potty!” Remember praise needs to occur during the act not after.

Supervise Closely

Always keep an eye on your puppy, that’s why using a leash is so important, it prevents you from getting distracted.

Positive Reinforcement

Always use positive reinforcement to train your dog. If you choose to use negative reinforcement, your dog will learn what not to do but then it will be scared of you. Your dog is your companion, not your toy.

Be consistent & persistent

Your puppy might make many mistakes during the learning process, and it could probably take a few weeks to learn. However, you need to stay consistent with your efforts. Remember, you only have to potty train your puppy once.

When accident happens

The rule of thumb is that if you didn’t catch your puppy housebreaking, don’t punish him for doing it. If he is not caught in the act, he’ll never know what he’s punished for.
