How to Release Shift Lock from the Car?

I drive a 1995 Acura Integra, with an Auto Transmission, and for some unknown reason yesterday, the shift lock, well, locked while the car was parked and I was at work. How do you unlock it? In order to get the car out of park, I have to use a pen and manually release the lock, but wanted to know how to fix it, hopefully without taking it to a mechanic and going broke. Any one know what I need to buy or do to fix this?
I’ve tried the 1st answer, it has nothing to do with the breaks (my old ford used to lock up when the parking break wasn’t hit just right). It’s something to do with the Shift Lock, which I know, because that’s how I was able to fix it temporarily. Does anyone know how to fix the shift lock? My break lights work, but could it still be the fuse?

Make sure your stepping on the brake pedal when you release it and review your car’s owner’s manual. Maybe there’s a service bulletin from Honda below. Also try applying the parking brake hard before releasing the foot brake pedal and turning the engine off.
